Concrete Can Add Beauty And Style To Your Home

Concrete isn't just for sidewalks anymore.

These days, the boring, gray material once resigned for walkways is showing up as shiny indoor flooring and beautiful countertops in the trendiest buildings in Utah.

Neil Ohmie and Erick Nay are brothers-in-law and business partners. They're co-owners of Ky-kan coatings. They call themselves contractors and artists. Their medium: concrete.

“The concrete, you're not limited to anything. We can do all different kinds of looks and ideas with concrete,” said Nay.

“You can get very creative with it, you can do any type of designs, patterns,” said Ohmie.

And at Mac Cool's restaurant in Foothill Village, these guys got very creative, from Faux green tile to bathroom countertops with jagged edges—they did it all. Their vision translates to homes and businesses with individual style.

“Every single job we do is unique. No two floors will ever be the same,” said Ohmie.

With some artistic craftsmanship, concrete can be created to imitate wood or stone. Because the material is naturally so strong and solid, the trendy designs are extremely tough.

“We use high end sealers, top end sealers we put down on the floor that's doing to give the consumer a long lasting product, very durable,” said Nay.

Decorating with concrete is also more affordable than traditional flooring options.

“Tile generally runs anywhere between six and ten dollars a square foot where acid staining generally runs anywhere from two fifty to four,” said Ohmie.

Neil and Erick say with this emerging medium in home decor. They always try to stay cutting edge.

“We try to get together once or twice a week and try to mess around with things and come up with new ideas,” said Nay.

“The nice thing about it is the sky's the limit with what you want to do with it. The floor is your palette,” said Ohmie.

Concrete is still used outside for poolsides and garden walkways, now with more color and texture. Ky-kan Coatings creates anything from sidewalk logos to cement showers.
